The Ashland County and Boyd County school systems pave the way for opportunities for students in the arts, according to data from the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE).
Ashland offers 16 different opportunities at the secondary level and Boyd offers 11. At the intermediate level, Ashland offers seven opportunities and Boyd offers 10. Elementary schools vary with two to five opportunities each.
KDE report card data shares the type of opportunities available to students at each school in each district as well as the number of teaching minutes in five categories: dance, theater, media arts, music, and visual arts.
The opportunities listed include general music and visual arts programs as well as extracurricular activities and classes in subjects such as photography, theater, choirs, groups, and music theory.
The Kentucky Department of Education provides guidance on standards and content areas on its website for the arts in schools and on how the basic level of knowledge and skills should move from elementary to college and in high school.
