Hundreds of people came to Meridian’s Mardi Gras 2022
MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) – Meridian’s Biggest Block Party! This is how the city authorities call this year’s Mardi Gras celebration.
Crawfish, jazz music and beads filled the streets of downtown as people were finally able to celebrate Meridian Mardi Gras.
“We expected it to be bigger because people are ready to go out and do things. It’s a great opportunity for them to be here this afternoon, see each other and have a great time,” said Craig Hitt, Director of Community Development.
This year, two rival dance groups performed dance moves on the streets.
“We are the fabulous flamingos. We come from all walks of life in Meridian. We come together to form this beautiful herd that we are,” said participant Sheri Burkes.
“It’s such an amazing experience. We’re having such a great time here. It’s all good vibes and good energy. Who would have thought Meridian had that. We knew that, didn’t we,” said participant Stephen Thomas.
“Who would have thought that Meridian would turn out and show up like this. It’s fabulous, we’re excited, we’ll be dancing and shaking our tail feathers,” Burkes said.
Live music filled the air as people took part in all the different activities. Bouncy houses at a dog show.
Many people had been waiting for this day for years, and many did not want it to end. But everyone was able to have their Mardi Gras 2022 parade.
“We are so excited that we can still be here today. We haven’t been able to do Mardi Gras for a few years. So I think everyone is excited to come back and enjoy the day. We had the largest parade meridian ever seen. We have about 30 floats here and a few other entries. We had a huge parade, great music and a great day full of fun at Meridian,” said Anna Grace, communications manager for Mitchell Distributing.
People also lined the streets for watchdogs of all sizes to enter the Krewe of Barkus costume contest.
